Google and Facebook take more than half of Romania’s online advertising

Romania’s online advertising market went up by 10% last year, to EUR 51 million. Google and Facebook increased their local advertising revenues by 20% and 25% respectively and reached more than half of the total market, according to the Media Fact Book Romania 2015 report released by media strategy firm Initiative Media.

Google’s revenues from its AdWords service increased by 20% last year, to almost EUR 23 million (45% of the market), and surpassed the local publishers, whose revenues were nearly flat, at EUR 22.16 million (43.4%). Google almost quadrupled its revenues in Romania since 2010 (from EUR 6 million) while local publishers only saw their revenues increase by 21% over the same period (from EUR 18.25 million).

Facebook also had a strong increase. The social network made EUR 3.5 million from advertising in Romania, in 2014, up almost fivefold compared to 2010 (EUR 750,000). Yahoo! reached EUR 2 million in revenues.

The online advertising market is expected to maintain its 10% yearly growth rate in 2015 and to reach EUR 56 million. The most dynamic segment of the market is mobile advertising, as mobile traffic and smartphone penetration have been growing at a high pace.
