Romanian FinMin sells government bonds to population through Treasury

25 September 2017

Romania’s Finance Ministry will launch a new public debt instrument called Tezaur, which allows individuals to buy government bonds directly from the Treasury without commissions and with an attractive interest rate, according to the Finance Ministry, reports Profit.ro.

Former finance minister Viorel Stefan announced in spring that the sale of government bonds to the population via the Treasury could start this autumn.

The Government had a similar program called FIDELIS in past years. The state sold government bonds to the population through this program in 2015 and 2016, but the sale was carried out via banks. The difference is that individuals will now be able to buy bonds directly from the Treasury.

The money collected from the sale of government bonds to the population represented about 1% of the Romanian state’s gross financing needs in 2016.
