Greater interest and investment boosts Romania's ranking on wind energy index

29 February 2012

Romania's investments in wind energy could continue on an upwards trend. Romania has risen to 10th place on the wind index issued by Ernst & Young, up from 12th place last year. Romania is on a par with Ireland and Poland on the index, ranking better than Ireland for onshore wind, but worse for offshore wind.

“In Romania, the private wind energy company Monsson Group began construction on its 150 MW wind park worth USD 317 million. This has nudged the East European country four places up the rankings to 10th place alongside Poland and Ireland,” reads Ernst&Young's report. Romania received the 13th place among 40 markets for attractiveness to investment across all renewable energy sectors.

Wind power has become increasingly interesting for energy companies already active in Romania, such as OMV Petrom, which has already started operations at a wind energy park in the country. CEZ has also started producing energy at its wind park in Dobrogea, which is still being developed and is set to become the largest in Europe when complete.
