Hands-on Romanian mayor starts paving the street himself to save City Hall money
The mayor of a village in Romania's Arad county has been paving sidewalks in the village himself for a week, in an attempt to save the City Hall some money. Corneliu Popi Morodan, the mayor of Ghioroc village, started paving the sidewalks himself, with the help of the vice-mayor and seven other City Hall employees, as they don't have the money to pay workers. The City Hall already had the stone paving, which the previous mayor had bought, and wanted to put to use on four streets in the village.
“It would have cost us RON 40 per sqm to pave it, but we have debts bigger than our budget, so we didn't want to get into even more debt. But we also wanted the paving used, not in storage. The only solution was to go onto the street myself and use the experience I had from when I paved my own yard a couple of years ago,” said the mayor.
He and the City Hall team are working on the street for two or three hours a day, mostly in the morning, and then heading to the City Hall for some office work. The City Hall's lawyer is now working on the concrete mixer, and together with the team, paves some 70 meters of sidewalk a day. They're hoping to finish the work in a couple of weeks.
The hands-on mayor was counting on other citizens to follow his example, but none of the 4,300 inhabitants of the village have so far offered to pitch in.
