U.S. President Barack Obama announced his intent to nominate Hans G. Klemm as Ambassador to Romania, according to a press release posted by the White House.

The U.S. hasn’t had an ambassador to Romania for more than two years, after the previous Ambassador, Mark Gitenstein, finished his mandate. Charge D’Affaires Dean Thompson currently coordinates the U.S. Embassy in Bucharest.

Hans G. Klemm, 57, is a career diplomat. He has been working for the U.S. State Department for 34 years. His previous foreign assignments include Senior Coordinator for Rule of Law and Law Enforcement at the U.S. Embassy in Kabul, Afghanistan from 2010 to 2012, U.S. Ambassador to Timor-Leste from 2007 to 2010 and Minister-Counselor for Economic Affairs at the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo, Japan from 2006 to 2007.

His earlier assignments with the Department of State included postings in Germany, Japan, South Korea, and Trinidad and Tobago. Klemm holds a B.A. from Indiana University and an M.A. from Stanford University.
