Health Ministry: No Ebola cases in Romania

31 July 2014

Romania hasn’t recorded any Ebola case so far, as Romania’s Health Ministry has been monitoring the spread of the virus in Western Africa since February 2014, the ministry officially announced.

The Ministry said it’s closely monitoring the situation and that it has informed the emergency units in the country as well as the border police about the symptoms of the disease.

Romania has no direct flight routes to Western Africa so passengers from the Ebola affected region do not arrive directly on Romanian airports, the ministry mentioned.

The Foreign Affairs Ministry recommends that Romanian citizens avoid trips to the countries affected by the Ebola outbreak. Most cases so far have been recorded in Guinea-Conakry, Liberia, Sierra Leone and Mali. From February to July 2014, more than 600 deaths caused by the Ebola virus were recorded in the region, according to the World Health Organization.

There is no vaccine or efficient treatment against the Ebola virus and most cases of infection end up in death. The main symptoms of the disease are fever, headaches, diarrhea, bleeding and vomiting. The virus is transmitted through direct contact with the blood, biological fluids and tissues of infected persons.
