Heavy rain and hail in regions of Romania, Bucharest streets and passages flooded on Sunday evening

Southern Romania was under a Yellow Code for thunderstorms on Sunday evening with Bucharest, and the counties of Ilfov, Calarasi and Constanta affected.

Other counties were also affected by heavy rain: Mehedinţi, Gorj, Caraş-Severin, Dolj, Vâlcea, Argeş, Dâmboviţa, Prahova, Buzău, Sibiu, Hunedoara, Timiş, Alba şi, parţial, Arad, Bihor, Cluj, Sălaj, Maramureş, Bistriţa-Năsăud, Suceava, Braşov and Vrancea.

Traffic was hindered on the A1 highway, Bucharest - Pitesti because of rain on Sunday, as visibility was below 100 meters.

In Bucharest it rained heavily for two hours on Sunday evening, and in some areas hail was reported, leading to a level of 20 liters of rain per sqm. Several underground passages, including the Unirea passage, were flooded, and traffic was slowed down on several main roads in the capital city.

The Dambovita river level had to be lowered in order to evacuate the water which flooded the Bucharest sewage system. Several areas downtown Bucharest saw several centimeters of hail.

It will continue to rain today, and meteorologist expect the weather to improve on Tuesday, April 6.
