Heavy rain in Bucharest: flooded streets, broken trees, public transport affected, including the subway

Several streets in Bucharest were flooded on Tuesday (October 1) after heavy rain, while dozens of trees broken by the strong winds fell and damaged more than 20 cars in Romania’s capital.

The traffic is slow in Bucharest and the public transport is also affected by the heavy rains, with several trams and trolleys blocked on Tuesday morning by broken trees on the tracks. Also, several traffic lights in Bucharest are not working.

Moreover, the circulation at the subway stopped on Line 1, after a train remained blocked in Pipera area on Tuesday morning. At 10:00, there were hundreds of people waiting for the train in Victoria Square metro station.

Inspectorate of Emergency Situations teams responded to 25 incidents, of which 20 were trees that have fallen and damaged cars or blocked streets. The rapid response teams also pumped water out of several flooded buildings.

A woman was also hurt by a fallen tree in Presei Libere Square in Bucharest, suffering a head trauma and possible fractures.

An orange code for heavy rains is also in place starting September 30, 21:00, until October 2, 02:00, for  Bucharest and severalcounties in Romania, namely Teleorman, Giurgiu, Ilfov, Calarasi, Ialomita, Braila, Constanta and Tulcea.

In these places, the amount of water will exceed 60 liters per sqm over large areas and 80 liters per sqm in some places. The weather is extremely cold, daytime temperatures being around 10 degrees lower than the average for this time of the year.

Other counties in South, Southwestern and Southeastern Romania are under a yellow alert for heavy rains starting today (September 30), 13:00, until October 2, 8:00.
