Heavy rains affect Romania’s agricultural production

06 May 2014

Recent heavy rains ruined farmers’ plans, but also their crops. Part of the grain production is compromised, as well as part of the production of vegetables in greenhouses, according to farmers’ representatives, quoted by local Hotnews.ro.

The danger in these cases is that Romania might turn to imports, which might trigger an increase in prices, if the domestic production does not cover the country’s consumption needs.

Dragos Frumosu, president of Sindalimenta, says that in the case of cereals, about 10 percent of the farmland was compromised, while in the case of vegetables in greenhouses, up to 5 percent were affected by the recent hail.
