Heavy snow covers Romania's mountainous areas
Just two weeks after the first snow of the season, the Carpathian massif Bucegi is under heavy snow and being lashed by strong winds.
It started snowing heavily at above 2,000 meters altitude on Sunday evening (September 29) and it continued on Monday as well.
The layer of snow is already 20 centimeters thick above 2,000 meters altitude.
Mountain rescuers have asked tourists to avoid going up the mountain where they risk getting stuck.
The first snow of the season fell in the Bucegi massif two weeks ago, but the layer of snow was a small one.
Meanwhile, in the Vrancea county, a school bus got stuck in the snow on Tuesday morning in the mountain village of Vintileasca.
The heavier than expected snow and the thick layer made it impossible for the school bus to get to the school until snow removal equipment was brought.
“The elderly say they have never seen something like this. The corn is not yet harvested, the apples are still in trees, but winter already came,” said Georgel Spătaru, the mayor of the Vintileasca village.
Car traffic was blocked on Tuesday morning for two hours on the national road connecting lepsa and Ajuda in Vrancea county.
