High temperatures trigger high energy consumption and blackouts in Romania

10 August 2011

High temperatures and high electricity consumption recorded in this period in Romania heated the electric networks and lead to blackouts, in Bucharest and all over the country.

The intervention specialists solved the blackouts, but sometimes, because of the very high temperatures and the increasing electricity consumption, some problems can not be solved as quickly as they should, even in the modern areas.

The electricity consumption in the first half of 2011 was 26.268 billion kWh in Romania, 4.7 percent higher than the same period in 2010, according to the National Statistics Institute (INS). The public lighting decreased by 12.8 percent in the first half, while the household consumption grew by 2.4 percent.

The production in power plants was 16.527 billion kWh, up 22.1 percent, while hydroelectric production totaled 9.364 billion kWh, decreasing by 3.1 percent. The production in the nuclear power plants was 5.643 billion kWh, up 2.3 percent, according to INS.
