Higher food prices bring Romania's inflation to September peak
Romania reached a peak in its annual inflation of 5.33 percent in September, above the target set by the country's Central Bank. The month of September brought a monthly increase in prices of 1.18 percent, mostly due to higher food prices. Non – food items were 0.6 percent more expensive in September compared to August, while food was 2.3 percent more expensive. Tariffs for services were up 0.4 percent.
Vegetables were the most expensive food items – up 9.8 percent compared to August, while potatoes recorded a staggering 27 percent price increase. Fruits were 5 percent more expensive month-on-month, and eggs, by 7.23 percent.
Romania's Central Bank estimated an annual inflation rate of 3.2 percent for this year, with a target of 3 percent, plus/ minus one percentage point. BNR had warned that risks are high for inflation to go up its target because of higher prices for raw materials and food, reforms, fiscal adjustement and political tensions, among others.
