The Romanian pair Horia Tecau/Florin Mergea defeated Brazilian duo Marcelo Melo/Bruno Soares in the quarter finals of the Rio Olympic tennis tournament. Tecau and Mergea are the first Romanian tennis players who reach the semifinals of an Olympic tournament.

Mergea and Tecau beat the Brazilians in three sets: 6-4, 5-7, 6-2. They will play against Americans Jack Sock and Steve Johnson for a place in the final and a shot at the Olympic gold.

Horia Tecau and Florin Mergea will also play in the mixed doubles competition. Tecau makes a pair with Irina Begu and Mergea has teamed up with Monica Niculescu. Both Begu and Niculescu have been eliminated from the women’s singles and doubles competition.
