How many Romanians want to be “forgotten” by Google?
Google has received more than 253,000 requests in the past 12 months from EU citizens asking the search engine to remove some links to pages containing information about them.
The search engine has already removed a total of 321,000 URLs of the total 920,000 requested, and decided to keep 457,000 URLs, Google announced. The remaining 142,000 URLs are currently under assessment.
In Romania, Google received 4,556 requests for the removal of more than 19,000 links. The search engine already evaluated almost 16,000 URLs, but only removed a quarter of them (4.390).
The most requests were filed in France (51.685), Germany (43,086) and the UK (32,076).
The Court of Justice of the European Union ruled in May 2014 that individuals have the right to ask search engines like Google to remove certain results about them. The court decided that search engines must assess each individual’s request for removal can only continue to display certain results where there is a public interest in doing so.
