Ikea’s sales increase by 14% in Romania

Swedish furniture and home décor retailer Ikea recorded sales of EUR 128 million in Romania in the fiscal year ended August 31 this year, up 14% year-on-year.

Ikea only has one store in Romania, in the northern Bucharest Baneasa shopping area.

Over 3.3 million people visited the store between September 2016 and August 2017. The company sold 18.3 million products, with 23% of them being furniture items and 77% decorations and accessories. Online sales rose by 35.1% during this period compared to the previous financial year.

Ikea’s food department, which includes the Ikea restaurant and the Swedish delicacy store, saw a 9.9% increase in its sales. Food sales accounted for 6.1% of the retailer’s turnover in Romania, namely some EUR 7.9 million. Candies were the most popular product, followed by Swedish meatballs and hot dogs.

The Ikea store in Bucharest has some 670 employees. The Swedish retailer has recently started the construction of its second store in Bucharest. The new unit will be located in the Pallady area, in Eastern Bucharest.
