IMF delays Romanian visit due to referendum on presidential impeachment

16 July 2012

A visit to Romania by a joint delegation from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), European Commission (EC) and the World Bank has been delayed until after the referendum to impeach suspended president Traian Basescu. Originally scheduled for July 24, the visit was delayed until the following week, according to an announcement  PM Victor Ponta on Monday.

“It was delayed because the IMF and EC delegations have always considered that they should not come during electoral campaigns, said the Prime Minister Victor Ponta.

A referendum to impeach the country's president Traian Basescu was set for July 29. Basescu is currently on campaign, trying to convince Romanians to keep him further on the presidential seat. Romania's interim president is Crin Antonescu, the leader of the National Liberal Party (PNL).
