Intelligence Service official: Romania is a target for state-sponsored cyber attacks

23 September 2016

Romania is a target for state-sponsored cyber attacks, mainly because it is a member of NATO and the EU, said Florin Cosmoiu, the head of the Cyberint Center with the Romanian Intelligence Service (SRI).

“There are state-sponsored attacks that target the strategic institutions of a country, the critical infrastructure. These attacks occur in every country, Romania included. We are a target of state-sponsored attacks because we are members of NATO, the EU, and some countries that are engaged in such attacks are targeting us as well. They want to steal strategic information from Romania, also targeting our critical infrastructure,” Cosmoiu said, reports local Mediafax.

He gave Ukraine as an example, where the power was cut in a large region. According to him, such things could happen anywhere in the world, and that is why Romania has tried to increase its capabilities to protect critical infrastructure.

He also stated that criminal groups have recently targeted financial and banking systems in Romania. Another threat is represented by cyber attacks from extremists.
