28 July 2016

Italian entrepreneurs Gianfranco Toniolo and Alessandro Toniolo, father and son, have opened their second gelateria in Bucharest, under the brand Gran Gelato Artigianale. The ice cream shop is located on Calea Floreasca 91/111.

Gianfranco Toniolo opened the first Gran Gelato gelateria in 1992 in Portogruaro, a small town near Venice, in Italy. He started creating recipes using natural ingredients and traditional manufacturing techniques, such as manually mixing the ingredients.

In 2013, Gianfranco and his son Alessandro brought their brand to Romania and opened their first gelateria in Bucharest near Unirii Square, on Radu Voda Street. The shop quickly became popular and now has some 500-600 clients per day and over 1,000 during weekends, in the summer months.

The company’s sales increased from EUR 16,000 in 2013, to EUR 32,000 in 2014, and EUR 77,000 in 2015, according to official data from the Finance Ministry.

Thus, the Taniolos decided to expand their business and open another unit.

The Gran Gelato recipe book includes over 40 ice cream recipes and the menu is different every day. The most popular are Fior di Latte, Vaniglia, Pistacchio, Frutti di Bosco, Limone.

Other popular gelaterias in Bucharest include Cremeria Emilia and INNI Gelato Artigianale, in the Old Town, Cioccogelateria Venchi on Calea Victoriei, La Delicii and Moritz Eis, both in Floreasca, and Dolce Italia, near Timpuri Noi.
