Italian rally pilot sets speed record on Romania’s high altitude road Transfagarasan
Flavio Barrone, an Italian rally pilot, managed to set a speed record on Romania’s high altitude road Transfagarasan on Monday. He drove the 13-kilometer winding road between the Balea waterfall and Balea lake in just 9 minutes and 13 seconds, according to Digi 24.
The altitude difference between the start and the finish line is about 800 meters, as the Balea lake is located at an altitude of over 2,000 meters (2,034 m).
Barrone drove a Ferrari 458 sports car that was tuned for maximum performance. The Romanian authorities closed the road for four hours to help the Italian in his attempt.
The Transfagarasan is Romania’s most famous road. Built on Nicolae Ceausescu’s order, between 1970 and 1974, it has a total of 90 kilometers and is one of the most picturesque roads in the world, but also one of the most dangerous.
The road became famous worldwide after the famous British auto show Top gear filmed an episode on it in 2009. Since then, the road has been used as a setup for international TV shows and TV commercials.
