Judge gets helm of Romania's Superior Court of Magistrates
Judge Adrian Bordea is the new president of the Superior Court of Magistrates (CSM), having been elected with the majority of votes on Monday (January 6). Prosecutor Gheorghe Muscalu was elected vice-president of the CSM on the same day.
Bordea replaced Oana Schmidt Hăineală, who ended her one – year mandate. At the time, she was the first prosecutor to run the CSM.
Bordea was the only candidate for the CSM head seat, and got 14 votes for, three against, and one abstention. Judge Adrian Bordea was previously the vice-president of CSM, having been elected in February 2013. He represents the judges within the CSM, while the VP represents the prosecutors. By law, the president and the vice president of the CSM cannot represent the same section.
The CSM is made of 19 members, including the Justice Minister, the country's general prosecutor and the president of the superior court, as well as two representatives of the civil society, chosen by the Senate. Nine judges and five prosecutors are elected by their respective sections.
Bordea used to work as a judge in Targoviste, and then in Dambovita, and since 2001, he has been a Superior Court of Cassation and Justice judge.
The CSM vice-president Gheorghe Muscalu is a law graduate, currently doing doctoral studies at the National Intelligence Academy. Since 2006, he has been a prosecutor at the service for preventing and combating terrorism activities within the Organize Crime and Terrorism Investigation Direction DIICOT.
Prior to that, he was chief prosecutor at the organized crime and anti-drug service within the same DIICOT. From 1997 to 2001, he was chief prosecutor at the Sinaia Court.
