Kaufland launches Scan&Pay app option in Romania

16 August 2016

German retailer Kaufland has launched the Scan&Pay app in Romania, which lets customers scan the products they want to buy with their smartphones, thus avoiding huge checkout lines.

The service is currently available in the Kaufland hypermarket located on the Barbu Vacarescu boulevard in Bucharest, but the retailer plans to expand it to other units as well, reports local Hotnews.ro.

The Scan&Pay app is available for both iOS and Android. The clients who install the app can scan the products’ bar codes by themselves, with their smartphones, thus spending less time at the checkout point. After scanning the products, the clients will pay their purchases at a special cash register.

One of the app’s advantages is that the customer can see the purchases’ history and value. However, the customers who want to use the app will have to connect to the store’s WiFi.

Kaufland is the largest retailer in Romania, with a turnover of over EUR 2 billion in 2015, up 14.7% over the previous year. The company’s net profit reached EUR 146 million, up 58%.
