Labor costs on the rise in Romania but still four times below EU average

Labor costs reached EUR 6.3 per hour in Romania in 2017, well below the EU average of EUR 26.8, according to recent Eurostat data.

Romanian companies have four times lower average staff expenses than companies in the rest of the EU, according to statistics.

However, labor costs in Romania have been on the rise, up 15% year-on-year in 2017, the fastest such increase in the EU. Romania is second in the EU for cheap workforce, after Bulgaria.

The gap between labor costs in Romania and the EU average has narrowed from 10 times lower in 2004, to 4.2 times lower in 2017.
