Romania's ruling party leader: Anyone can be charged with tax evasion today

17 May 2018

Romania’s legislation on tax evasion needs to be changed because anyone can be charged with tax evasion today based on the current legislation, Liviu Dragnea, the leader of Romania’s ruling Social Democratic Party (PSD) and Chamber of Deputies speaker, said on Wednesday, May 16.

“As it is today, the legislation is not clear and any legislation that’s not clear is interpreted by control institutions – this is the tradition in Romania – to the detriment of the one who is controlled,” Dragnea said, according to local Mediafax.

“The legislation is so complicated, so dangerously drafted, that any business man in Romania, in this second, can be accused of tax evasion,” he added.

“There are many Romanian business people who are looking to sell their companies and leave the country," according to Dragnea.

He also said that the goal should be recovering the damages in tax evasion cases, not sending business people behind bars and killing the revenue source. The PSD leader asked the Finance Ministry, tax agency ANAF, Justice Ministry and the Parliament to come up with serious proposals to change this legislation shortly.
