Local paleontologist plans dinosaur museum in Cluj – Napoca after stocky dragon local discovery

14 September 2010

The recent discovery of a new species of dinosaurs in Alba county in Romania soon triggered the idea of a dinosaur museum in the Western Romanian city of Cluj - Napoca.  Matei Vremir (Vremir Matyas), the Cluj – Napoca based paleontologist who discovered the stocky dragon skeleton in Alba county, has already been contacted by several museums in the world, among which the Natural History Museum in New York, interested in receiving copies of the skeleton discovered by the Romanian. The museums will exchange skeleton copies, which would then fuel the creation of a local dinosaur museum. The museum in Cluj – Napoca is expected to open this fall and should add new dinosaur skeleton copies within a year.

The only problem is that this planned museum is yet to find a space to showcase the dinosaurs relics, as each skeleton requires around 10 cubic meters of space to be diplayed. The skeleton discovered in Sebes, nicknamed the '‘stocky dragon', is the most complete dinosaur skeleton in Romania and among Europe’s carnivorous dinosaurs.

About 75 percent of the ‘stocky dragon’ has been found so far, and hopes are high for the skull and the missing rests of the tail and a leg to be found soon. The fossil unearthed in Sebes is 70 million years old and belongs to a new species of theropoda.
