Longer queues at the border as Romanians return home for summer holiday

07 August 2018

Many Romanians living abroad are returning home for the summer holiday in this period, and this has been causing longer queues at the border crossing points.

Data from the Border Police showed that about 446,000 people entered Romania last weekend (August 3-5), while 449,000 left the country.

The busiest crossing points are at the border with Hungary, with the Nădlac II point being the one where the longest queues usually form. More than 120,000 people crossed the Nădlac II border crossing point last weekend, with most of them (70,000) entering the country. At moments, the queues formed at this point reached 10 km, local News.ro reported. This resulted in a waiting time of up to three hours.

Most of those who have entered Romania last weekend are Romanians working abroad who return home for the summer holiday or to participate in the anti-government protest announced for August 10. However, some also said they took a vacation especially for the protest.

The August 10 protest will be organized in the place that hosted most of the other anti-government protests staged in Bucharest so far, namely Victoriei Square. The Romanians living abroad have been preparing the protest on Facebook.
