Low cost airline Wizz Air allows passengers to use electronic devices onboard in flight mode

29 January 2014

Low cost airline Wizz Air, which also runs Romania flights, will allow its passengers to use portable electronic devices (PED), such as mobile phones, tablets or e-Books, during all flights.

The devices can only be used in their ‘flight mode’ in any phase of the flight, reads a statement of the company.

The new rules for using PED were issued by the European Aviation Safety Agency EASA and adopted by Civil Aviation Authority in Hungary.

“Passengers are asked to remove their headphones when safety announcements are made and to switch off the electronic devices when the crew can’t confirm that their functioning in ‘flight mode’ corresponds to the criteria for use during flight,” reads the company’s statement.

Also, large electronic devices that could cause injuries, such as laptops, will have to be stored during takeoff and landing.

Wizz Air is the largest low cost airline in Central and Eastern Europe and operates a fleet of 45 Airbus A320 aircraft from 19 bases with over 300 routes linking 90 destinations in 35 countries.

Wizz Air has some 1,700 employees and had some 13.5 million passengers in 2012.
