Lowest number of deaths by car accidents in Bucharest in 2013, but jaywalking, still among main reasons
Car accidents in the Romanian capital Bucharest led to the death of 62 people in 2013, according to the Bucharest Police.
More than 780 serious accidents took place in Bucharest last year, and some of the main causes were crossing the street in unmarked places or jaywalking, speeding and failing to give priority to pedestrians crossing the street.
However, the number of deaths caused by car accidents was lower by 17 compared to 2012. It was actually the lowest number of deaths by car accidents in Bucharest in the last 10 years.
Other 760 people sustained serious injuries, a drop of 186 compared to 2012.
Speeding, failing to give priority to pedestrians and crossing the street in unmarked areas caused about 64 percent of the car accidents in Bucharest last year. Meanwhile, about half of those who died in car accidents jaywalked. As for who was to blame in car accidents, in 56 percent of the crashes, it was the driver's fault, while pedestrians were to blame for the rest of accidents.
