Lufthansa flights canceled in Bucharest as cabin crew strike hits airline

07 September 2012

Lufthansa flights to and from Bucharest going to, or arriving from Munich and Frankfurt, scheduled for Friday (September 7 ) were canceled due to the strike at the airline. Passengers were re-directed to flights of other airlines, according to Bucharest Otopeni airport. So far, three return flights were canceled on each of the Munich and Frankfurt routes, as well as two flights to the two destinations.

Passengers flying with Lufthansa to and from Dusseldorf will not be affected by the strike.

The airline, which is facing a 24-hour strike of all its cabin crew, will offer accommodation, food and beverages for passengers for whom it was not possible to find a flight with another airline. Passengers cannot ask for the refund on their tickets, as the strike is considered a force majeure event.

Around half of the 1,800 Lufthansa flights on Friday are supposed to be canceled because of the strike, which was announced on Wednesday.

The Independent Flight Attendants Organization (UFO) started the strike last week, which expanded at several of Lufthansa's airport hubs. The UFO wants a 5 percent pay rise for the cabin crew and assurances on job security.

The strike affects Germany's main airports including Frankfurt, Berlin and Munich. Frankfurt airport has been "strongly affected", the airline said.
