Major campaign in Romania: 80 hectares of public land to be afforested in mid-November
A total of 80 hectares of unproductive public lands in Romania will be afforested on November 14, during a national campaign initiated by the Environment Ministry and EcoAssist Association.
Over 300,000 trees are to be planted during the campaign. Also, the authorities expect other 650,000 Romanians to join the campaign and plant trees on the same day. This way, November 14 might become the day when 1 million trees will have been planted in Romania.
“Romsilva will give for free the saplings that will be planted on the lands provided by local administrations, and will also offer expert guidance to volunteers. Moreover, Romsilva specialists will take care of the planted saplings until they reach maturity,” said the Romanian Minister of Environment Gratiela Gavrilescu.
Those interested in joining the campaign can register until November 14. According to the Ministry, the official registration platform for volunteers is available on plantamfaptebune.ro.
Various private companies and non-profit organizations have been carrying out afforestation campaigns in Romania in recent years. One of the best-known campaigns is the Padurea Transilvania (Transylvania Forest), organised by Banca Transilvania and Tasuleasa Social Association near Cluj-Napoca.
Romania has an afforestation rate of only 29%, below EU level
