Romania's Informatics Research and Development Institute ICI, which manages the .ro domains, will develop a project which will provide cloud computing infrastructure to state institutions. The project will be worth some EUR 16 million, and will be covered by European funding.
The main target of this project, called ICIPRO, will be to provide 'competent, consistent, coherent and transparent services to individuals and the business environment,” said Doina Banciu, director of the institute.
Cloud computing represents the practice of using a network of remote servers hosted on the Internet to store, manage, and process data, which can be accessed via a web browser, without installing any programs on the user's local computer.
Cloud computing has become very popular in recent years, with around half of US business currently using it, according to recent estimations. The cloud computing industry expected to grow to USD 150 billion in 2014.
