How many Romanians have overdue payments to banks?

The number of people who are more than 30 days late with their payments to banks or non-banking financial institutions increased by 3,700 in November last year compared to the previous month, reaching over 615,000.

Compared to January 2016, the number of people with overdue payments dropped by 98,500, according to data from Romania’s National Bank (BNR).

At the end of November, the total arrears amounted to RON 8.56 billion (EUR 1.9 billion), of which RON 2.9 billion (EUR 643 million) were in Romanian currency and over RON 5.6 billion (EUR 1.2 billion) in foreign currency. Payments that were more than 90 days overdue totaled over RON 4.6 billion (EUR 1 billion), namely more than half of the total arrears.

Meanwhile, the arrears to the credits granted to companies and population amounted to RON 13.7 billion (EUR 3 billion) at the end of November last year. Considering that individuals had arrears of EUR 1.9 billion, this means that companies had arrears of around EUR 1.1 billion.

The total loans exceeded RON 223.4 billion (EUR 49.5 billion) at the end of November, up 0.97% compared to November 2015. The loans granted to individuals reached over RON 112.9 billion (EUR 25 billion), namely more than half of the total loans. The consumer loans amounted to RON 52.3 billion (EUR 11.6 billion) whereas the mortgage loans reached RON 58 billion (EUR 12.8 billion).
