Resignation of indicted & runaway Romanian-Hungarian deputy reaches Parliament

15 April 2015

The original document with the resignation of MP Marko Attila has reached the Romanian Parliament, two weeks after he sent it electronically.

The MP from the Democratic Union of Hungarians in Romania (UDMR) was sent to court in the case related to overvalued compensations granted by the National Authority for Property Restitution (ANRP).

Marko Attila sent his resignation electronically as he left Romania in December last year and went to Hungary, after his Parliamentary colleagues approved his preventive arrest. The Parliament didn’t take it into consideration the electronic version, and awaited the original.

Marko Attila has Romanian and Hungarian citizenship. He’s former UDMR leader Marko Bela’s nephew, according to Romanian media.

His gesture can be interpreted as a way of avoiding the judicial proceedings, said Attila’s lawyer Eugen Iordachescu. “Magistrates can decide any time to take preventive measures against him.”

Prosecutors investigate Marko Attila in the same case with the former president of Romania’s National Integrity Agency ANI, Horia Georgescu.

Last year, Marko Attila also got a three-year jail sentence with parole in another corruption case. The decision was final.
