Romania’s Transport Minister resigns four months into mandate

UPDATE: Transport Minister Dan Sova resigned on Tuesday afternoon, June 24, four months after taking the ministry's helm. Prior to that, he run the infrastructure and foreign investments department. Sova is also vice-president of the ruling Social Democratic Party (PSD). He said his resignation was triggered by his need to get involved into the presidential campaign.

Media sources however say he was to be fired, and that he chose to announce his resignation instead.

The former Interior Minister Ioan Rus could take over as Transport Minister as Dan Sova,  currently at the helm of the Transport Ministry, is expected to announce his resignation on Tuesday afternoon, June 24, according to sources quoted by Romanian news website Gandul.

According to the same sources, Sova will be part of the presidential campaign for Prime Minister Victor Ponta, who is expected to announce this summer his candidacy for the presidential seat.
