Supermarket operator Mega Image has entered the convenience stores segment in Romania by opening Shop & Go units. The first such store was opened in Bucharest, on Delea Noua St., and covers 170 sqm, featuring mostly food products. Another such store will be opened on December 17 in Pantelimon, which will bring the number of Mega Image operated stores to 72 by the end of the year.

Mega Image joins the proximity stores segment, which has already been entered by Mic.ro stores, run by a company owned by Romanian billionaire Dinu Patriciu.

Mega Image opened 21 supermarkets this year, out of which five in December only and plans to open three more by the end of the year. The retailer also entered the discounter segment this year, with the Red Market stores, now at 12 units. The retailer, part of Delhaize Group, will also open a new logistics center next year.

Mega Image's general manager for Romania is Xavier Piesvaux. Mega Image entered the Romanian market in 1995 and currently runs 72 supermarkets under the Mega Image and Red Market brands in the country.
