Million dollar painting by Romanian Adrian Ghenie to go on sale at Christie’s auction this October
Nickelodeon, a painting by Romanian artist Adrian Ghenie, will go on sale at the Post-War & Contemporary Art Evening Auction to be organized by Christie's in London on October 6.
The painting has a starting price of GBP 1 million – GBP 1.5 million (USD 1.29 million – USD 1.94 million).
Dated 2008, the work was executed on two panels that together span over four meters in width. It was previously exhibited at the National Museum of Contemporary Art (MNAC) in Bucharest in 2009-2010.
Another one of Ghenie’s paintings will go on sale during the same auction, namely The Surgeon and His Soul (Study for Kaiser Wilhelm Institute). This artwork has a starting price of GBP 150,000 – 200,000 (USD 194,550 – 259,400).
Born is 1977 in Baia Mare, northern Romania, Adrian Ghenie is one of the most talented young painters in the world. Some of his paintings have sold for millions of dollars at international auctions.
He set a new personal record in February this year, when his Sunflowers painting sold for GBP 3.1 million (USD 4.5 million) in a Sotheby’s auction in London. His previous record of GBP 1.42 million (USD 2.43 million) was registered in the summer of 2014, when the artist sold his painting The Fake Rothko.
He recently sold one of his paintings for EUR 70,000 via the Thaddaeus Ropac Gallery, and has donated the money to the national fundraising campaign organized in Romania for Constantin Brancusi’s Wisdom of the Earth (Cumintenia Pamantului) statue.
