Minimum wage to increase in two stages in Romania

05 November 2018

The minimum gross wage will increase in two stages in Romania in the following two months, with the first increase being scheduled for December 1, according to labor minister Lia Olguta Vasilescu.

Thus, the gross minimum wage in the economy will increase to RON 2,080 (EUR 446) on December 1. Then, the minimum wage differentiated depending on studies or seniority will come into effect on January 1, 2019. The value of this minimum wage will be of RON 2,350 (EUR 504) for people with higher education and for those with a seniority of at least 15 years, local G4media.ro reported.

The government is to adopt this week an Emergency Ordinance amending the Labor Code, Vasilescu announced at local TV station Antena 3.

“The Labor Code includes the minimum wage, but not the minimum wage differentiated depending on studies. The first step is to amend the Labor Code,” the minister said.

The current minimum gross wage in Romania is RON 1,900 (EUR 408) and applies to all employees, regardless of their education or seniority.

The labor minister previously announced that the gross minimum wage would increase from November 1. However, the prime minister later denied the information.
