Modern retail reaches 60% market share in Romania in Q1
Modern retail reached a market share of 60% in the first quarter of the year, up by 4 percentage points compared to the same period in 2015, according to the GfK Consumer Panel Services.
Hypermarkets reached a market share of 29% of the whole trade, up by 1 pp compared to last year, as the value of the shopping basket increased. They were followed by supermarkets, with a market share of 17%. The supermarkets recorded both higher shopping baskets and more shoppers.
The discounters also recorded a higher market share as the shopping frequency also increased.
The value of consumer goods sold increased by 0.4%, despite a 6% drop in prices for food, which shows that the shopping volumes increased, according to Gfk. Moreover, Romanians have been buying more expensive products from the same categories.
The GfK Consumer Panel Services study monitors consumption in 3,000 households.
