More foreign tourists visit Romania in May

Arrivals in tourist accommodation units in Romania amounted to over 829,000 in May this year, up 14.6% year-on-year. The arrivals of Romanian tourists represented 73.6% of the total while foreign tourists’ arrivals accounted for 26.4%.

A total of 219,000 foreign tourists arrived in Romania this May, 15.6% more than in the same month in 2014, according to recent data from the National Statistics Institute (INS). Most of them came from Europe (over 162,000), followed by Asia (30,500), and North America (15,700).

The overnight stays amounted to 1.8 million in May 2015, up 12.3% year-on-year. The average time of a stay was 2.3 days for Romanian tourists and 1.9 days for foreign tourists.

The arrivals of foreigners to Romania, registered at the customs, amounted to some 751,000, 13.4% higher than in May 2014. Over 90% of them came from Europe. Among EU member states, most of the arrivals were registered from Hungary, Bulgaria, Germany, Italy, Poland, and Austria.

The departures of Romanian visitors abroad, according to customs, amounted to 1.1 million, up 5.6% year-on-year.

In the first five months of the year, arrivals in tourist accommodation units in Romania amounted to over 3 million, 13.7% higher than in the same period in 2014. Arrivals of foreign tourists represented 23.9% of the total (some 735,000).

Overnight stays totaled 6.3 million between January and May, up 14% year-on-year. The average time of a stay was 2.1 days for Romanian tourists and 2 days for foreigners.
