More summer fun: Six new beaches will open for tourists in Romania

14 January 2016

Romania plans to arrange six new beaches on the Black Sea coast, following a proposal of the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve Administration’s management. The new beaches are located in the what is now protected area, but there is no protected fauna and flora in the areas chosen for this project, according to the authorities.

The Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve Administration has already started having talks with the businesses in the area and the local authorities to find the best forms of organization for the approximately 20 hectares of sand in Constanta and Tulcea. These areas will no longer have the status of protected area of the Danube Delta Biosphere, reports local Digi24.

In Constanta county, the project targets beaches in Midia, Corbu, and Vadu while in Tulcea county the initiative focuses on beaches in Sulina, Portita, and Sfantu Gheorghe. These beaches will be managed by the local authorities, not by private entities, according to the project's initiators.

For example, in Corbu the local authorities plan to arrange a 3-hectare touristic area with wooden cottages for tourists’ accommodation and ecologic toilettes. The Corbu beach is much wider, but only a part of it will be fitted with tourist amenities.

The new beaches might officially open this summer.

Thousands of tourists have been visiting these "virgin beaches" every year seeking a peaceful place to spend their summer holidays, as the resorts around Constanta and those in the southern part of the Romanian seaside get very crowded during high season. However, these beaches didn't have any services and amenities, such as public toilets, showers, shops and restaurants, and lifeguards. Moreover, camping was not allowed.
