More than a quarter of Romanians smoke regularly
More than a quarter of Romanians (27%) are regular smokers, according to a recent Eurobarometer survey made in 2014. The rate is down 3 percentage points below the previous study in 2012, but remains above the average in the European Union, which is 26%.
The rate of smokers in Romania is higher with men (33%) than with women (22%). Most Romanian smokers (95%) use regular packed cigarettes, compared to 76% in the EU, and only 5% prefer to roll the cigarettes they smoke (24% in the EU).
Almost three in five smokers (58%) said they tried to quit smoking and one in five tried in the past year.
About 80% of the bars in Romania and 59% of all restaurants allow smoking inside. The rates are much higher than in the EU, where only 25% of all bars and 12% of the restaurants allow smoking inside.
