Most Romanians believe Romania should turn to West, survey shows
Most Romanians believe that Romania should turn towards the West (NATO, European Union) in terms of political and military alliances.
A recent survey conducted by INSCOP reveals that 86.1% of Romanians believe that Romania should turn to the West and only 5.2% think that the East (Russia) would be a better direction. Almost 90% of the mature population (those aged between 31 and 50) support the idea that the West is a good direction for Romania.
When asked what country had a positive influence over Romania’s evolution in the last 25 years, most of Romanians, namely 36.9%, chose the US. The ranking is completed, in order, by Germany – 18.4%, France – 4.4%, the UK – 4%, Russia – 3.8%, Italy – 2.8%, Spain – 2.1% and China – 0.9%.
Romania this year celebrates 25 years since the December 1989 Revolution whcih marked the fall of the communist regime in the country.
The INSCOP survey was conducted between November 27 and December 2 on a sample of 1,076 people, at the request of Adevarul newspaper.
