How much do Romanians spend on food for Christmas?

22 December 2016

An average household in Romania will spend at least RON 400 (EUR 88.5) for Christmas this year, with a large part of the budget being used to buy meat and pork products, according to an analysis by News.ro.

The basic products acquired for Christmas by a Romanian household include pork, traditional sweet bread called cozonac, flour, oil, eggs, salami, sausages, fruits, and vegetables.

News.ro gathered information from the Bucharest markets, hypermarkets and the Prices’ Monitor, a platform managed by the Competition Council. According to companies in the retail industry, food prices in Romania have recorded low fluctuations this year of up to 3%.

The bulk price of pork increased by 33% this year up to RON 8 (EUR 1.8) per kilogram, without VAT, from RON 6 per kg, according to processors. However, the final consumers will not be able to see the price difference, due to the various holiday discounts.

The analysis also shows that the traditional products sold in farmers’ markets or in specialized stores are more expensive than the products sold in hypermarkets and supermarkets.

A recent study of the research company Mednet Marketing Research Center showed that Romanians living in cities are willing to spend on average RON 650 (EUR 144) on food for the winter holidays.
