NATO headquarters inaugurated in Bucharest next week
The NATO Force Integration Units (NFIU) will be simultaneously launched in all six countries on the eastern border of the European Union, including Romania, on September 3. The NATO headquarters that will operate in Bucharest will be inaugurated then, said Defense Minister Mircea Dusa, cited by local Economica.net.
Last week, the US announced the launching of the largest air exercise in Europe after the Cold War, held in Germany, Italy, Romania and Bulgaria, with the participation of 4,800 soldiers from 11 countries. The exercise aimed to demonstrate the “Alliance's ability to mobilize troops to act quickly and to maintain a strong and secure Europe.”
Over 200 soldiers from Italy, Spain and the US executed on August 26 an airborne assault on the Smardan military base in eastern Romania, as part of the exercise.
