NATO ships take part in large scale anti-submarin exercise in the Black Sea
NATO naval group SNMG-1 (Standing NATO Maritime Group 1), which is on a mission in the Black Sea, is in Romania’s Constanta port until July 20.
SNMG-1 consists of Portuguese frigate Dom Francisco de Almeida (F-334), Dutch frigate Tromp (F-803) and Romanian frigate King Ferdinand (F-221) with a Naval Puma helicopter on board.
Turkish submarine Atilay arrived in Constanta port a day earlier, on July 15, reports local Digi24. During the exercise, this submarine will be the ships’ target.
A total of 14 Romanian and foreign navy ships will participate at the Sea Shield 15 exercise, together with eight aircrafts and a submarine. There will also be 2,000 Romanian and foreign troops from seven NATO states, namely Bulgaria, Greece, the Netherlands, Portugal, Romania, the US, and Turkey.
