Anti-graft prosecutors send Romanian investor to court for tax evasion

26 June 2018

Prosecutors of the National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA) have sent local investor Nelu Iordache to court for tax evasion and misuse of company funds.

He is accused of registering fictitious purchases in his firm’s books, which generated almost RON 9 million (some EUR 2 million) damages to the state budget, representing illegally cashed VAT.

Other persons involved in the case were also sent to court for tax evasion, complicity to tax evasion and false testimony. The prosecutors seized several real estate assets of Iordache and his firm.

Nelu Iordache was sentenced to 6 years and 3 months prison at the end of last year for fraudulent misuse of EU funds in a project for the construction of the Nadlac-Arad highway. The damage in that probe was estimated at RON 1.2 billion (EUR 258 million). He was also accused of instigation to abuse of office and forgery in another probe, but he was acquitted of these charges. Neither of the court decisions are final and may be subject to appeal.
