New access system opens at the Bucharest subway. What does it look like?
Metrorex, the Bucharest subway operator, finished the first modernizing works at three of its stations’ access-control system, namely at Republica, Titan, and Nicolae Grigorescu. The new access points are already in use.
As part of the operation, Metrorex replaced the more than 20-year old turnstiles with modern swing gates that facilitate both the entry and evacuation of passengers in case of emergency situations.
The new gates are equipped with a reader system for the magnetic stripe on the subway card as well as contactless cards. Travelers will be able to use the latter one once the access system is replaced in all the stations in the Metrorex network.
The other access ways at the Republica, Titan and Nicolae Grigorescu stations will be closed starting April 26 and until May 5.
Metrorex recently received fines of over RON 12,000 (EUR 2,670), the Bucharest – Ilfov Emergency Situations Inspectorate announced, quoted by News.ro. The fines were given because some subway stations only have one evacuation point and because of the retail spaces on the subway station premises, which reduce the space for passenger traffic.
