New presidential impeachment would ruin partnership with US, take away Romania's voting rights in EU, says adviser
A new attempt that will to suspend the country's president would destroy the strategic partnership Romania has with the US and take away the voting rights the country has in the EU, believes Romanian presidential adviser Sebastian Lazaroiu.
“If another impeachment happens, and I am not exaggerating, because I know how much tension there is in Brussels and Washington, and those from the Social Liberal Union also know it, I think the US will not keep the Strategic Partnership. The day the Parliament suspends the President, it is likely that the US will be very clear about the partnership, and the EU will very likely suspend our voting rights, which is a catastrophe. We would then be out of the EU,” said Lazaroiu. However, he went on to say that he does not believe a new presidential impeachment will be attempted.
Romania's ruling coalition had the president suspended earlier this summer for over a month, but he survived the referendum, which failed to achieve the required attendance, even though most voters were in favor of his dismissal. The referendum and entire political battle attracted criticism for Romania from EU leaders, and also affected the country's currency, and even economy, according to commentators.
