New traffic lights to be installed in 101 intersections in Bucharest

05 April 2017

Bucharest City Hall plans to install new traffic lights in 101 intersections in the city, especially in the places where serious accidents have happened in the past or where traffic jams usually occur.

The General Council of Bucharest (CGMB) was to vote on this project on Wednesday, April 5, reports local News.ro.

“Due to the changes in the road traffic caused by the continued growth in the car fleet, mobility of the existing car fleet, and number of vehicles transiting Bucharest, the local roads' traffic capacity has been steadily declining. In addition, there are several points of conflict between pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles in many of the existing intersections without traffic lights,” reads the draft decision.

Moreover, according to the document, despite the Traffic Police’s efforts to prevent road accidents, there are still accidents on the capital’s streets, with serious human and material consequences.

Bucharest City Hall expects the investment in the new traffic lights to help ease traffic congestion, increase road safety, reduce fuel consumption, and the volume of emissions.

The traffic in Bucharest is among the most congested in the world, according to a study by GPS navigation systems manufacturer TomTom.
