29 April 2010

The next payment from the International Monetary Fund loan to Romania, some EUR 850 million, will go directly to the Romanian Central Bank's (BNR) coffers and it will not cover the budget deficit again, said Mihai Tanasescu, Romania's representative with the IMF, quoted by Mediafax newswire.

Romania has signed a two-year stand-by agreement with the IMF for EUR 12.95 billion, out of which EUR 9.2 billion were already paid out. Around EUR 2.2 billion of this amount was used to cover the budget deficit.

An IMF mission is currently in Romania to review the stand-by agreement and see whether the country has fulfilled its agreement with the fund. The evaluation report could reach IMF's council mid-June, when a the council will decide whether to give out the fifth installment of the loan.
