Number of banks in Romania reaches 36
The number of local banks dropped by four last year to 36, according to Romania’s National Bank (BNR).
The local banks’ share capital amounted to EUR 5.6 billion, down 7.8% compared to 2014.
The Romanian banking system consolidated last year due to two merger operations. OTP Bank Romania completed acquiring the local lender Banca Millennium in October last year whereas the acquisition of Volksbank Romania by Banca Transilvania finalized with the two banks’ merger on December 30.
The number local subsidiaries of foreign banks dropped to seven, as Montepio Credito and Royal Bank of Scotland ended their operations last year.
